Why Prenatal Yoga?
I expected my pregnancies to be easy, given that I was active and healthy. One of my first assumptions about motherhood-- busted!
I loved being pregnant, but I had a various assortment of physical challenges, all alleviated, to a greater or lesser degree, by yoga. Even more important, my yoga practice was a refuge from my over-active and often worried mind. During yoga, I connected deeply with my babies, and cultivated trust and awareness of my body that served me well during labor and birth, and which I continue to draw upon as a mother. I have a particular love and interest in teaching yoga to women, especially during the mysterious and magical time of pregnancy, and the adventure of new motherhood. My prenatal yoga classes focus on postures and exercises that emphasize the breath and relaxation, flexibility, and strengthening of muscle groups that are specific to pregnancy and childbirth. |
We target poses to strengthen the body in preparation for labor and birth, and to adapt to the ever changing demands of pregnancy. There is always some combination of challenge, laughter, reflection, and delicious stretching.
Just as significant and powerful, I cultivate a safe space that encourages you to connect with your baby and your body’s fantastic wisdom and power. This offers strength and comfort through pregnancy, labor, and birth, and of course as a mama.
There is a wonderful community aspect to prenatal yoga as well. We start classes with a check in – how far along each mama is, and what’s going on that we might be able to address during class. Women often share other pregnancy related woes, and fellow students are a great source of coping strategies and local resources. Many women make connections to other mamas during my classes that continue into motherhood.
People leave my classes feeling relaxed, more at ease in their bodies, and deeply connected with their babies. My students often report that what they learned during yoga was essential during labor, helping them stay relaxed and more easily cope with the challenges of labor and birthing their babies.
